Flavours Begin

Manadonese cuisine comes from North Sulawesi, with Manado at its heart. Known for its bold use of chilli, fresh herbs, citrus, and aromatic spices, the cuisine reflects the region’s rich seafood and local ingredients, with dishes like Rica-rica and Woku at its core.

These are the flavours we grew up with and the reason Baku Sayang began: to share the Indonesian food we love, so more people can enjoy that sense of comfort, wherever they are. Sometimes, a familiar meal is all it takes to feel a little closer to home.

From Our Tradition to Your Table

Our journey began in 2018 on Jakarta’s Jalan Pesanggrahan, born from a family kitchen and a love for the Manadonese recipes we grew up with. What started as a 180-seat restaurant grew into a beloved local gathering place, teaching us that great food is about more than taste; it’s about authenticity, consistency, and bringing people together.

What started as a place to share our favourite dishes has grown into a way for us to bring those flavours beyond the restaurant, and now, across the ocean to Japan.

Living away from Indonesia can make familiar food harder to find, and busy days don’t always leave time to cook from scratch.

In 2026, we brought Baku Sayang to Japan to make those familiar flavours easier to enjoy; giving you a warm, satisfying meal whenever you need one, without having to cook from scratch.
